The Bishop is coming!
In the Episcopal Church, a bishop is an ordained minister who serves as the chief pastor and overseer of a diocese, offering leadership, guidance, and unity among the congregations in their care. There are also several sacramental acts that are reserved for bishops, including ordaining clergy, confirming or reaffirming the faith of members, and blessing the holy oils used for chrism, healing (unction), and the Oil of Catechumens. Once blessed by the bishop, these oils become symbols of our shared life and unity within the wider Church.
In the Episcopal Church, the diocesan bishop is required to visit every parish at least once every three years. In smaller dioceses, such as San Diego, these visitations often take place annually. The Right Rev. Susan Brown Snook, Bishop of the Diocese of San Diego, will visit us at Good Samaritan on April 12. We are still finalizing a few details, but at this point we expect her to be present at both the 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. services.
If you are interested in being baptized, confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church, or in reaffirming your faith, please let me know so we can prepare together ahead of the bishop’s visit.
In addition to presiding at worship and preaching, Bishop Susan will offer a brief forum following the service. She will share about the life and work of the diocese and allow time for questions and conversation.
I hope you will make every effort to be present for this special visitation.
Blessings,
Paul
