When We Sing Together
by Paul Klitzke on July 03, 2025
Music has an incredible capacity to help people connect. From radio call-in requests to mixed tapes to shared playlists, music generates connections and can accentuate emotions. Live music amplifies this capacity, where performers interact and encourage participants to sway, move or sing together.
The church has a long tradition of utilizing the power of music well in worship. The notion that “to sing is to pray twice”, often attributed to St. Augustine resonates with many. In church, we experience synchroneity of breath as we sing together, which leads toward unity of spirit. The words and language reinforce our scriptures and infuse our time with theological wisdom.
As worship is planned, it is important to consider what music matches the readings and other themes of the day or season. As we incorporate songs and hymns from beyond the common Episcopal resources, we also weigh the theological to ensure it matches our beliefs. Even some old favorites fall out of favor as our own faith and circumstances change. Like many things in life, when it goes well, this complex process can go relatively unnoticed.
At Good Sam we are blessed with a dedicated and talented choir and musicians. I have been delighted and impressed with the quality and diversity of the music offered week by week. I believe it is also worth noting the remarkable leadership that Julie offers. She brings out the best of each participant through encouragement and guidance. It has been a joy to see and hear it.
In seminary, some of us would grade hymns as we sang them in chapel. Occasionally I come across an “A” or “+” in my hymnal and remember an old favorite. Other times I find a “D” or even an “F” and remember to steer clear! As I review my own notes, it leaves me curious about your favorite (and least favorite) hymns and songs. I hope you’ll send me an email, or drop me a note, it may very well find its way into worship sometime soon if you do.
Blessings,
Paul
