Guided by Prayer, Moved to Action
by Paul Klitzke on June 12, 2025
Earlier this week we shared a letter from the Episcopal Bishops of California. It raised concerns about how immigration law is being enforced and apprehension that these actions “will escalate the confrontations unnecessarily.” I am proud to be in a Diocese and State where these thoughts are shared. Yesterday, Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe offered a letter addressing the same concerns, writing “As Christians committed to strive for justice and peace among all people, we know that there is a better way.”
Both letters urge us to pray — a call I hope we can each embrace. The idea of “thoughts and prayers” has come under some criticism in the last years, which may be justified. If we fail to follow through, it is an empty promise. We may wonder what prayer will accomplish. Yet I hope we do not underestimate its capacity to move us and others, often towards the love of God. And we don’t need to stop at prayers alone. I believe prayer often guides us toward meaningful actions.
Another concern I have is that the methods being used might divide our nation further. The deployment of Marines within a major city could create animosity between the public and those who serve. While some military and federal officials may agree with the commands being handed down, others may desire a better way, as suggested by our Presiding Bishop. May we keep our hearts and minds open as we hold these concerns in prayer.
Blessings,
Fr. Paul
