Feast of Pentecost

Feast of Pentecost

Feast of Pentecost

This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost — in many ways, the culmination of the Easter season. The disciples, reminded by the resurrected Christ that they have work to do, step forward to preach and teach. This feast day aligns with the Jewish feast of Shavuot, a day when many would have traveled to Jerusalem. This helps explain why the disciples’ preaching was heard in many languages.

Throughout our Easter season, I have been returning to a phrase from Revelation: "What has been, what is, and what is to come.” This reminds us that the work begun in Jesus' day continues and is still happening. So, too, we believe that the story of Pentecost continues.

While technology removes many barriers to communication, we live in a more diverse global society than ever before. As we proclaim the gospel, each in our own way, I wonder how it will be heard. God may help translate our words so they can be heard, just as happened in the story in Acts.
In our travels, I have been pleased by how even a few words or phrases can help generate connections with new people. Even when language is a barrier, a smile or act of kindness can create a connection. As we prepare for Pentecost, how can we each strive to share the love of God?

Blessings,
Paul
