Most of us have been taught that envy is a negative trait—or even a "deadly sin"—to be hidden or overcome. But what if envy is actually a revealing, constructive emotion that can be harnessed for personal growth and self-discovery?
In this interactive forum, Dr. Kim will share insights from her executive coaching work with high achievers, delve into social science research and cultural perspectives, and discuss practical ways to transform envy from a source of discomfort into a tool for hope and positive motivation.
Key Discussion Themes
-
Rethinking "Deadly" Emotions: Shifting our perspective to see how envy can clarify what we truly value and desire in our lives.
-
Cultural Perspectives on Envy: How different languages express envy—including the Korean term puroyo (a blending of envy and positive admiration that serves as a conversation starter) versus shiki (malicious envy).
-
Benign vs. Malicious Envy: Understanding why focusing on the good you desire—rather than tearing down the person who has it—turns envy into constructive motivation.
-
Practical "Scribbles": Dr. Kim’s approachable reflection technique using simple 3x5-inch index cards to help put insights into action.
